Status: In its first cabinet meeting, the government approved a National Animal Disease Control Programme to eradicate the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis by 2025. The FMD programme which was earlier implemented in 221 districts, has now been expanded to the whole country. FMD and Brucellosis are common diseases among livestock that reduce their milk output and thus hurt the milk trade and other livestock products. The initiative aims 100% vaccination for 3.6 crore female calves once a lifetime under the Brucellosis control programme, and vaccination for 30 crore bovines, 20 crore goats/ships, and 1 crore pigs twice a year under the FMD control programme. The vaccination coverage however stands at about 82 percent. i ii
