224. Maintaining growth in minimum wages
Status: The Modi government got the ‘Code on Wages’ passed in the parliament in August 2019 to address issues concerning minimum wages, timely payment and equal remuneration. The Code binds the government to revise the minimum wage every five years. While no revision has been made in the minimum wages as yet, inflation-linked allowance continues to be added to the wages every six months. The current national floor-level minimum wage is Rs 176 per day, which was last revised in June 2017. The government set up a committee in 2021 to develop a new formula for determining minimum wage; the committee is still to submit its report, following which the govt may revise the minimum wage. i ii iii iv v
