Status: Key steps taken include setting up the new naval base ‘INS Jatayu’ in Lakshadweep, the appointment of India’s first National Maritime Security Coordinator, expansion of coastal surveillance with 38 new radar stations and mobile stations, and providing QR-enabled Aadhaar Cards to over 12 lakh fishermen for identification and strengthening the maritime security. Additionally, the government has set up a Common Communication Plan to bring all coastal security agencies into a single network with a dedicated spectrum for better coordination and exchange of security-related information. However, the coastal security scheme (CSS) that the government had been implementing ceased to operate in March 2020; the next phase of the scheme is still awaited. Under the scheme, the govt. provides funds for setting up coastal police stations, patrolling vehicles and other equipment to the coastal states/UT. i ii iii iv v vi vii viii
