246. Permanent membership of the United Nation Security Council
Status: Four out of five permanent members of the UNSC continue to support India for its permanent membership in the UN Security Council. The government is working towards achieving this goal by first ensuring the expansion and reforms of the UNSC which requires approval by 2/3rd of the members of the UN. For this, the government has been engaging with G4 nations, L.69 Group of developing countries, and other member states in the Inter-governmental Negotiations (IGN). Consequently, India was elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in 2021 for the eighth time with an overwhelming majority of 184/193 votes. i ii
